PITTCOM BROS RISE UP
in honor of finale tomorrow i am writing an unhinged ramble about THE PITT
i had heard about this show before from my sister/tori/general posts on twitter and then a fic writer i like from another fandom wrote melangdon (more on this later...) so i was like well i should try it out!!! even though i usually don't watch medical procedurals. and then i binged 14 episodes in 2 days LOL. it's actually so serious
my favorite characters are:
1. santos
2. mohan
3. mel
4. dana
5. collins
6. mckay
7. ellis
8. javadi
9. whitaker
honestly i love all the characters on this show... Except langdon but i have a complicated relationship with the implications of his character aka the diametric positioning 2 my bbygirl. once again more on this later
anyway the fun thing about the pitt is that each episode covers one hour of a single shift, so the whole first season is only one day (similar to an older show called 24 but in er format). robby is the senior attending who is at work despite it being the anniversary of his mentor's death during covid, which he has untreated ptsd from and progressively spirals out about over the course of the day. the other established main characters are dana the charge nurse, collins a senior resident with whom he has previous romantic history, langdon another senior resident and basically his mentee, r3 mohan whom robby is especially harsh on despite her competence & good bedside manner, and single mother r2 mckay. on top of that there are also new characters starting their very first shifts in the hospital: awkward and well-meaning r2 mel, cocky and abrasive intern santos, Weird Little Mouse ms4 whitaker, and insecure girlgenius nepobaby ms3 javadi. also part of the staff are princess and perlah, two filipino nurses who don't have main roles but add the perfect banter to all of their scenes ๐งก and of course surgical resident GARCIA. More On This Later
what i love about this cast is that like.... i really do think the show is so well-written on top of it being fairly accurate in terms of medical terms / realistic er cases / the plights of working in a hospital, and of course it's still a television show so there are many moments that stretch the imagination but part of its appeal is that it feels very supremely human and you can empathize easily with these characters as they fuck up and learn from their mistakes. WHICH IS WHY!!!!!!!!! ok.
random but the funny thing about this cast is that they're Awl nepobabies like why is walter white's daughter in this rn. so not the point
basically miss trinity santos my little blorbo who is so misunderstood is such a polarizing character because people hate women but like... this show is so Woke. there is simply no way around it. the writers were like omgggg... let's make a medical show and make sure it's soooo woke. and they wrote in abrasive abuse survivor santos who has a weird charged lesbian work flirtationship with a woman she accidentally sticks a knife into and tries so hard to stand by her values and then she rightfully raises concerns about someone who is putting other people's lives in jeopardy because of his illness and people are like wow she is a SOCIOPATH who has NO CONCERN for other people's lives and i'm like omggggg. ur literally failing. the test is a single True or False question and you got 0% omgggggggg
like everyone on this cast is deeply flawed except maybe dana whose only flaw is that she's too badass too sweet too funny too cool too stubborn etc. i just think it's crazy that santos makes mistakes and everyone is like she needs to be humbled immediately and everything she's doing is just mindgames and she doesn't care about her patients at all and they all seem to be ignoring the fact that this is literally her first shift?!? LMFAO like of course they bring that up to mention that she's insanely cocky and way in over her head to be doing all of this on her first shift, which is fair, but they don't seem to leave any room for improvement/growth when mentioning that. meanwhile langdon has been here for years and is doing something literally illegal and dangerous and everyone is like but he's pretty temu chris pineeeee. like actually i think he and his fugly chin dimple need to . no i'm sorry i don't hate langdon he's fine
the thing about santos and langdon is that they're clearly written to be 2 sides of the same coin โ a bit abrasive and brash, too confident in themselves and intelligent for their own good, kind but not nice, ambitious, a bit in it for the "cool" factor of medicine and prone to cherrypicking cases on top of wanting to help people, and most of all overcompensating for past difficulties by putting on a mask/front/coping in unhealthy ways. like reading through old threads was such a trip because people were like Surely mister LANGDON doesn't have issues with substance abuse, he's so competent and sweet and kind, santos is only doing this because she's threatened by his beautiful perfect accountability and she's an evil little girl bully who is threatened by men doing their jobs and needs to be put in her place and go back to the kitchen and make him a sandwich. and it's like.... ? addiction is a literal illness, it deserves compassion and care whilst not making someone immune to critique, like i just feel like people's understandings of langdon and santos are sooo skewed. because they're both people who need to grow, and langdon's whole point is that he has "dark" depths but like having a disorder is not an irredeemable part of himself, it's just that being how he is in his condition in his role literally stealing and tampering with medication for his patients DOES put people's lives at risk and he objectively needed to be removed from the situation. and it's sooo funny to see people seethe like "ok so maybe santos was right about this one thing... BUT!!!!!!!!!! clearly she did it just to fuck him over" like completely ignoring the obvious crisis she had about the situation from start to finish, and reporting him not just for personal vindication but also because she actually does care about patient safety and upholding protocol. the thing about santos and langdon is that they both have strong senses of justice, which at its baseline is a good thing โ the only problem is when that sense is distorted or acted on impulsively (e.g. santos with ladder guy, or in langdon's case when he literally is working impaired, even if it's not visibly so, and thinking himself overly capable of managing his personal issues and the lives of these patients while keeping his colleagues in the dark). but Like i just think it's funny that people can have empathy for langdon doing something dangerous but they see santos and are like surely nothing could ever justify or explain her actions... and it's like ok really?
like i think the show does a good job overall of showing that these characters don't always make the right moral or emotional decisions, especially when it comes to situations that are unfamiliar or foreign to them. like with robby and mckay, they make it very clear that mckay has had traumatic experiences with men and is sensitive to misogynistic threats while robby is ultimately dismissive of the situation, not because he's right or because he lacks empathy, which he's proven to have a lot of, but because frankly this is just a perspective he isn't capable of having and there isn't the time to dissect it further. obviously the "learning" moments are more apparent when it's actually in the context of a mentor and mentee or like the residents and med students, e.g. javadi being ultra-sheltered genius girl who has never dated or really done anything in her life except study and then whitaker being reprimanded by mohan about the sickle cell patient, but we're shown time after time that even robby, especially unraveling under the stress of this day, is a human with his own limitations.
further dissecting santos's interactions with the other babies it's like:
1. i think people who think she bullies mel are SOOOO funny. mel has complete autistic immunity to her sarcasm she literally doesn't care or understand what she's saying she's just confused by her awkward and abrupt communication style. like if anything this is just embarrassing for santos
2. when i tell u people on reddit were INCENSED over her conversation with javadi and being like hehe we should be friends and u can get me a rec letter from your mom and it's like... Okay so here's the thing with santos. To Me, yes she is obviously an asshole and yes she looks out for herself above all, but i feel like this is such a stupid thing to get caught up on because it's clear that she feel this innate need to make her intentions clear from the get go so she can like, lay out all her "unsavoriness" upfront and put the ball in the other person's court. like this isn't villain behavior, i honestly think it's just a defense mechanism where she wants to present herself as honestly (and frankly self-deprecatingly) as possible because she's been hurt before and she's like Well if people think i'm rude and annoying and mean and awful then i can't get any WORSE in their eyes and i can't disappoint them / they can't disappoint me. like i'm not saying this is a good philosophy or that she's right for doing this, but the way she tries to "play" with people never feels actively malicious and i feel like you need to be reading into her interactions with such a Negative Heart to think of them that way lol. beneath it all there's still a young girl from essex....
not to still be going off about random reddit comments but i was like surely people can't misinterpret her taking the fall for mohan and omfgGGG. ONCE AGAIN. people were like "she only did that so she could rile langdon up and start an argument with him" LKE CAN A WOMAN NEVER DO ANYTHING GOOD FOR ANOTHER WOMAN EVER? everything is always about that UGLY MAN????
sorry. i don't hate langdon. he's fine
the point is... yes santos is annoying. yes she's a bit traumatized and overcompensating and reckless and needs to learn more and grow a lot. but also she clearly cares about mel, whitaker, javadi etc. and craves companionship and DOES like being part of a team and 50% of langdon's antagonism toward her was obviously his fear of being found out (on top of not really liking how much of himself he saw in her). like i think they can work it out on the remix in season 2 it's fine
anyway ships
- garsantos: garcia is the funniest character ever because she's such a messy lesbian who wants to fuck santos so bad she's out there asking for her zodiac sign while everyone else is like WTAF is wrong with you two. the best moment in this whole show is when santos accidentally drops a scalpel into garcia's foot and then she rushes out to meet her later on and is like "I CAN'T STOP THINKING ABOUT YOUR FOOT ๐" ๐ญ๐ญ๐ญ๐ญ๐ญ tfw bae won't let u hit because she's waiting on the hiv test results from when u impaled her
- melangdon: hate it. i mean it's whatever idc if people ship them but I JUST THINK IT'S FUNNY......... i love mel because she has lots of dimension but is ultimately such a likable, genuine, enjoyable character, and obviously she and langdon get along well because she causes him minimal problems and he has a very milquetoast personality. which is Fine... i like their mentor/mentee relationship... but i JUST THINK IT'S FUNNY. ok let me explain
- rollins: this is soooo funny to me because robby literally spends half the show shooting her yearning looks and then collins has a miscarriage DURING HER SHIFT (nightmare shift for everyone) and he comforts her and she's like yeah i had your baby when we were dating but i aborted it and they talk about it in a very roundabout way but that's basically the gist of it and he's like i forgive you of course and it's very sweet and emotional. And then people are like yeah i love mel/langdon but rollins ? idk. can't a man and a woman just be friends ??? like genuinely the constant racism and misogyny in basique tv show fandoms are just boring at this point can't you get a better refrain. IT'S EXHAUSTING!!!! ready for rollins s8 slow burn baby arc though
anyway knowing all of this it's literally hilarious that garcia's actor is like "i love playing a strong kweer latina who gets to be a top for the first time in her life" and then langdon's actor is like "i love mel because she reminds me of my irl gay sister." they're never letting the lesbians lose
- ellisantos: this has limited material at the moment but i'm looking forward to any future dynamix... i think santos should always be getting degraded/propositioned for a threesome with garcia by ellis
- mohabbot(t): very confused by whether it's abbott or abbot btw the show synopsis and subtitles can't seem to make up their minds. anyway this intrigues me at a low level because i'm willing to eat anything remotely canon in this show but i'm also like mehhhh i think it's interesting in the sense of like a victorian era situationship where i think they should have low simmering daddy issues tension for ten seasons but it's never acted upon or resolved. basically it's good as it is right now
anyway those are like the main obvious dynamics in the show... i love to joke about other ships (robaker for the girls who get it) but i don't like actually ship them LOL. Unless... ? jk. whitaker is my fav male character on the show because he's such a stupid harmless little mouse he makes me laugh... nebraskan farmboy twink gets pissed and bled on for 15 hours (Real Not Fake)
i think someone should write a garsantos fic where they hooked up at a lesbian bar prior to their first shift which is why garcia has such an intense "first" reaction to seeing her and they have to spend the whole shift dancing around the fact that she had her strap in her less than a week ago. ALSO GARCIA'S FACEEEEE when she calls santos trouble re: langdon incident ๐ญ if i speakkkkkkk.
basically... it's that serious. omg i haven't even spoken at length about mohan. mohan is my 2nd favorite character and at times she's kind of writers' blorbo mary sue but i love her so much that i don't mind it. also her actor is literally insane because she has perfect leftist film bro chappell stan twitter repost content and she apparently studied neuroscience at columbia with a minor in women's studies and then dabbled in web dev / took the mcat and was like oh this is so easy and became an mcat tutor but was also like hmmm maybe i should act? and now she's just an actor. GIRL WTF... why is she literally the prettiest princess in the er of all time. i love mohan so much
also i didn't even know it was possible to hate her but u guessed it... people on reddit dislike her because she's "condescending" to the male characters on this show. u can't even make this up. i think the pitt subreddit should die lowkey
where was i. i'll stop here but i think we should all become pittcom bros. #yas
i had heard about this show before from my sister/tori/general posts on twitter and then a fic writer i like from another fandom wrote melangdon (more on this later...) so i was like well i should try it out!!! even though i usually don't watch medical procedurals. and then i binged 14 episodes in 2 days LOL. it's actually so serious
