snl 48-49

c__c so tired & nauseated all the time but instead of making another self-indulgent gifset i'm going to finally finish writing this post... where 2 begin!

i stopped watching snl regularly during the digital covid run but nowadays i've been keeping up with it fairly consistently, except i never watch live runs and instead consume it strictly via the youtube upload playlists any time between the next day to like a week after..... this is going to be so disorganized but i wanted to write a post about current cast members & recent sketches that i've enjoyed because why not.

firstable the problem with me is that i will always be a julio girlie through and through... (still hasn't watched problemista) i miss his writing on the show sooo much T__T of course he shone the most in pre-tapes because his work was so absurdist and grandiose at times that it was best elevated by very specific cinematography, but ultimately his writing has produced some of my favorite pieces of snl content ever. and i consider his comedic style to be truly singular :') >>> slight detour before i get to the actual entry content but there are SO many lines he's (or bowen or someone adjacent but still) written that are permanently seared into my memory & have been adapted into my vocabulary lol. he and emma are kind of the perfect duo as far as i'm concerned...

>litr the entire time i watched marriage story (2019) i was thinking to myself Girl that's the little gayboy from wells for boys. his impact!
>cecily's ad voice is sooo good i miss cecily.... T__T ("i mean, it is LIKE that, but that's just PART of it!")
>emma stone's scornful delivery @ "that's because it's not FOR you. because you have EVERYTHING. EVERYTHING is for you!!!" and also "do you want to go watch y tu mamΓ‘ tambiΓ©n?" get me every time lol

genuinely do not remember anything else from the hstyles ep but the way i have canonically incorporated "hell job at sara lee" into my daily vernacular. must get rid of toxic in community / we think it would be healthy if sara lee stopped having threesomes!!!

of course julio's magnum opus to most people is papyrus which we'll get into. and i've spoken about it too much but the actress is a forever fav of mine....... also the fact that barbie instagram singlehandedly inspired Barbie (2023)?!??? #neverforget

thankfully though we still have bowen. i'm very meh on che/jost but since wu is its own separate entity in a sense i don't think about them that much... also it's forever a bit crazy to me that cecily and kate and so many iconic cast members are gone but kenan is still here... and that heidi is essentially a senior cast member now?! my favs on he show are easily bowen + heidi + ego though marcello is quickly rising up that list 😌❀️ and i'm also fond of/appreciative of other recent faces in the show. i think chloe has a limited repertoire but i still like her, longfellow is really only good for wu but it is what it is, jaj has grown on me soooo much and does some really fun character work despite being primarily regarded for his trump impression (also love him in any game show host role LOL), and i think devon has improved a lot since he joined. and ofc mikey is the reliable backbone of many sketches... so.

my memory is bad so i will only discuss this season peripherally but i think a lot of people will agree that pedro and quinta's episodes were big highlights and to this day their sketches stand out to me the most!!!

>re: pedro... random thought about this episode but i honestly didn't like the hbo mario kart trailer that much, i'm a big fan of when they do absurd overdramatized movie trailers but grouch set the bar too high and it doesn't hit that same note imo... actually grouch & wes anderson horror trailer are my favs lol those two are just Perfect <3

nevertheless i loved sooo many parts of this ep. i mean it gave us ego's lisa from temecula character (😭😭😭 when she drops the steak) and of course WAKING UP >>> pedro's accent work is truly so good... (that's not maaaah / buh. bee. boh. BIH BUH) and heidi trying soooo hard not to break at the end LOL. side note it kills me how much she ended up breaking in the rgos ep but we'll get there. also the big hollywood quiz is kind of underrated, i love bowen's announcer voice + the apple tv gag is so apt lol. but of course my 2 favs are 1) protective mom and 2) JAJ + DEVON BRITISH RAP DUO 😭 i've watched the latter so many times i'm sorry for being the way i am.

like honestly idk why this segment is genuinely hilarious to me but the way jaj breaks the i'm allergic to dairy rhyming scheme in the last verse is genius 2 me... take out the pods and 'EAR ME / che why'd you stop it mate / (pr63 voice) FACTS. also the sheer absurdity of the jan wouters reference ?! jaj's characters are so random but i love it 😭

anyway protective mom <3

it makes me sooo happy to see marcello's presence grow on the show both in terms of usage & writing credits because he's my fav recent addition to the cast. pedro has had... never mind i won't say it. but his motherly inflections and overwrought facial expressions are so good and natural and effortless it knocks me OUTTT. and of course the real genius of these sketches (adding in bad bunny sequel as well) is how marcello arranges the spanglish to make the english words the real punchline & thus intelligible to a larger audience while still keeping the overall dialogue in-context and cohesive and hilarious. pedro meticulously folding the paper bag + the cookie tin gag... ESTA NIΓ‘A VIENE A MI CASA CON VEGAN SLIDERS? / no le hables asΓ a la pobre, es una nice white girl 😭 also the og is the best imo but my fav line from the bad bunny one is no puedo creer que me trajiste a un NEPOBABY que seguro compra todo su comida en TRADER JOE'S.

tbqh chloe (troast) is difficult to define because i feel like she's only good in musical roles (i loveeee the latest chris stapleton song) but i'm like meh on a lot of other characters she plays. but it's okay i believe in her she can get there πŸ˜”

other random thoughts but i remember actually liking a lot of ana de armas's episode... she's obviously not the best comedic actor out there but the recording session skit with ego is hilarious 2 Me. (the stuttering 😭😭😭 d-d-d-damn spicy you live like this?) also even though the writing overall wasn't that strong i found megan's episode so charming!!! i think i just loved her delivery and how well she committed to her roles for someone who doesn't act! and the writers did a good job of tailoring the episode around her strengths.

^ i'm obsessed with this song fsr why is it legit catchy and also i love the THAT'S CRAZY back & forth with bowen at the end... she and bowen are just so fun together in general. (so uh... what's y'all's... trauma?)

anyway onto quinta πŸ₯° this ep was fun because we had short king marcello on wu (also why is marcello obsessed with that damn beethoven dog LMFAO) but i found midwife fun in an ott absurdist way and again i love when bowen plays weird Medical Doctor Characters, then drug dealer is like a very standard premise but quinta's ridiculous accent is SO good that it ties the whole thing together imo. the spontaneous patd singing / timeless chicago suburb white people joke / written AND directed by noah baumbach etc. etc. though the best sketch is probably the traffic altercation one with mikey LMFAOOO everyone is perfect in that. mikey and quinta work so well together when they play unhinged

otherwise it's so funny to me that sza big boys went viral on tiktok when it is what it is... also i like the concept of waffle house but jenna is just Not made for snl so i prefer the subway version from s49 because the cast pulls it off better. and i think the andrew/jaj toyota dealer sketch is so underrated:

last one b4 i move onto s49 but i love marcello's mlb wu appearance because it really shows off his physical comedy and just how much of a Dynamic Character he can be. he's SOOO charming and effortless it is really endearing to watch. also as someone who watches way too many post-game interviews it is unfortunately 2 real. "we had a game plan... and we executed it."

s49
if i had to pick my top 5 episodes and/or hosts this season it'd probably go:
  1. ryan gosling
  2. ayo edebiri
  3. adam driver
  4. josh brolin
  5. ramy youssef
BUT after ryan it's probably pretty variable... it's hard to rank holistically since there are people i'm more Subjectively Fond Of but whose episodes had lows or were just really inconsistent, and then people whose episodes didn't really spawn any "classics" but were overall quite decent. adam driver is also such a guy because it's like do i personally care about him at all? no. but is he kind of amazing at committing to any bit on snl and a really good host? i really do think he was among the best this season...

josh brolin was great in every aspect EXCEPT that he made it too obvious when he was reading the cue cards and it kind of throws you off in some sketches. that being said i can see why people loved this episode and i enjoyed it a lot... heidi being unhinged in bank robbery is such a delight. and MY fav is moulin rouge:

(insert las culturistas tina fey YOU HANG OUT WITH ARIANA AND SPONGEBOB NOW. THAT IS YOUR LIFE) why is this honestly incredible. first off you can tell bowen wrote this because the gays cannot resist a throwaway nicole kidman joke (is it because you're actually australian) (also did not care for jacob elordi in general but lol'd at bowen's naurrr bit during his monologue) but anyway the first time you watch this is truly the best because of how unexpected the last refrain is... also wonderwall 😭 bowen continuously breaking 😭 that's movie for DYINGGG. i could go on

adam's episode is like. first of all do the kylorens know that adam driver is out here doing mpreg concepts with bowen yang on snl? (well then SHE LOOKS GAY. EW) also tiny ass bag is not That good but the way he commits to everything in general is hilarious (airplane baby...) and i like it because of how qttttttt olivia's cameo is πŸ’œ olivia on snl was just endearing in general. speaking of COMITTING her all-american bitch perf was so fun. and marcello's depression in men wu appearance was good too

with ayo's episode i adored how much sheer fun the cast clearly had with her... though i did hate that they tried to shoehorn her jlo controversy into why'd you say it because like we need to be so fr she does NOT actually feel remorse for any of that lol. and why should she!!! anyway her character in school hypnotist is hysterical and her range is SOOO GOOD.

WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO ME WARLOCK? WHAT HAVE YOU MADE ME SAYETH? >>> i love to see her hold her own on the show and carry sketches with her own comedic ability 😭❀️ miss ayo u rock my world.

i don't think jacob elordi's episode was like that bad but it wasn't good. sydney's was... unwatchable and i still haven't seen the whole thing (+++ dakota johnson. i feel like dakota's public goodwill (note: the public being internet gays) has tanked so much in recent months. sorry completely unrelated) though parts of Bowen's Straight are hilarious on principle (what's your type? gay-presenting asian podcasters). unfortch i thought kate's episode lowk fell a little flat relative 2 expectations and that timothy charmander was like. well... it's timothy charmander. but he & chloe were really good in little orphan cassidy (him counting out their real ages was hilarious & she clearly just has a lot of musical comedic talent) and of course troye sivan sleep demon 😭😭😭 A deeply unserious man. (HE'S GAY FAMOUS! IT'S DIFFERENT! / BREATHE KAYLA. A BLOUSE IS A FEMME TOP) also how on earth did they get julien baker to do all that. save my girl....

tbqh thank god this show has marcello because what would they have done with bad bunny otherwise... protective mom 2 + telenovela + this digital short..... this was so ridiculous from mikey day filling in as the 4th spanish speaker + andrew quietly stealing the sketch with his holy water + πŸ‘†πŸ‘ˆπŸ‘‡πŸ‘‰ LA VUELTA but i loved the overall pacing & delivery, so well done.

not to go on too much of a tangent but tbh current snl cast just makes me happy because i love how established bowen has become and the absolute range of ridiculous characters he gets to do. 2 think of how far we've come from chen biao and people accusing him of being one-note / restricted to ~flamboyant gay characters~ (which people still do of course but not the same degree). for ex i love the panda cold open in jason momoa's episode because it is SO stupid but he's incred at injecting personality into non-human or even inanimate characters... mikey's biden is kind of weak (at least compared to jaj) and i don't tend to like cold opens that much but Alluringly Asexual panda bowen krilled me.

and of course T__T ramy's monologue is amazing...

i know it's like well he is a stand-up comedian but ramy's comedic timing is incredible and he worked the crowd so well here, easily top 3 monologues this season. i just... really appreciated this one and how earnest & empathetic he remains throughout, so many good lines that are perfectly delivered. his charisma is endless!!! mother... peace be upon YOU + i mean he'll probably forget. but i think somebody WILL call etc. etc... really my personal fav of the season. πŸ₯°

anyway last but not least rgos ep!!!

i was soooo afraid that my expectations would be too high after him producing some of my fav snl content and that this episode would fall short but no it is my favorite in years. i've rewatched it like 4 times... ok i need 2 relacks but - god. the amount of BREAKING in this episode somehow contributing to and enhancing its charm? heidi absolutely losing it multiple times? already so entertained by the emily blunt barbenheimer monologue performance:

&&& of course them having kate back to do close encounter cold open + the eva mendes jokes in can't tonight + the Entire Production of papyrus 2 in general. which my one gripe is i wish hadn't been cut for time (though from its length i obviously understand why) because og papyrus is really elevated by the laugh track but nevertheless it's a strong follow-up and i lost it at the last name reveal + MY DAD WAS SO HARD TO READ.

caitlin clark was a bit awkward on wu understandably but the setup with che reading her jokes worked well to circumvent those moments and her earnestness charmed me lol. also ONE) BE. TWO) FUNNIER. THREE) DUMBASS was the best joke of the segment.

one of the best songs snl has done recently... troast really adds so much to their musical roster and having a host who can contribute... er... the unhinged rap ryan delivered makes it that much more iconic. >THE ROMANIAN GIRL HAS THE EYES OF THE WALLS!!!

i could go on but really my favorite part of this episode is just everything about the bowen evil doctor sketch. heidi breaking during beavis & butthead was her biggest moment but there are all these other subtle moments of her losing it throughout that are so good, incl her laughing at ryan when he puts up the video camera the wrong way and then getting distracted and missing her cue afterward 😭

like ryan and bowen are SO good in this. ryan's wig and him having to blow his bangs out of his face and the fact that he was clearly losing it from the very beginning make his delivery of each line so iconic. "he was very old. he was very sick. and there was ALREADY an airpod inside of him." + the synchronized okayyyyyyyyyy + both of them collectively losing it as they feed each other. We're dating now. / The cookie crumbles? or the spoon? ...>i'll stop but why is this sketch so good. let me go watch it another 2 times.

why is this episode so good πŸ₯°πŸ₯°πŸ₯° 4ever grateful they didn't let me down. perhaps it is time to stream iconic 2009 indie pop album dead man's bones once more......

okay sorry. thank you for reading good bye etc.
