the ultimate fic medium

mixed media, social media, epistolary, multimedia etc. etc. etc. it's well-known that this is my favorite type of fic ever and that more than anything i ESPECIALLY love conspiratorial pov outsider meta 4th wall insanity tinhatting trollfic. i used to have a list of works i really loved that best embodied my multimedia tastes but i can never find where i put it so i wanted a post for me to easily refer to/update.
tbh i hate posting recs publicly because fsr i feel kind of rude about it like why am i putting these poor authors on blast right now... even though it is always 100% purely appreciative and a whole-hearted compliment and like "wow this piece of fiction changed my life" lol but idk i still feel awkward so.
Also i wanted to say if anyone has fics that are similar, or really any mixed media fic they like (i have read many that are mostly told through tweets and instagram posts so anything goes but imo it's Even Better when it's done through insane anon forums and very unexpected socmed channels that are unique to the character's personality if that makes sense) pls link if you feel like it !!! or don't... but you know. i would be hugely grateful for it !!!
i read a 814 fic recently that was so ingenious in using spotify as a communication tool and i was like oh anon your mind. and then i stumbled upon an old forumfic i used to love and i think that's what got me thinking about this again. aghhh and also i keep being like well i would love to write tinhattery mixed media fic but the problem is that (although the 814 author executed it very well) i feel like it's soo hard to write for certain sports ships because it's too closely related to the existing fandom like how do you do one for hockey when there are literally 5 fans, and then you can't really write these characters As The Fans because it's too unrealistic, unless you can really strike that balance of like insufferable stats nerd bro (the few who would qualify) or sportsblogger or whatever but even then it's like why am i tinhatting seanshap oc right now... anyway. i think for f1 it's acceptable because the fandom is way bigger and also more uhhh internationally diverse but i don't even know who i would write for so frankly it's impossible.
anyway this obviously isn't anywhere near everything i've enjoyed but i wanted to point out a few that i felt were very formative and imo also particularly unique in execution. hehe...

ok that's 9 fics i really quite enjoy. the thing is that i'm just so obsessed with Alternate forms of media and i don't even know how it would be implemented half the time but i get sooo excited when i see that someone has mocked up (even in just simple plain text formatting!) the most unexpected media, like twitter imessage discord etc. are all fun but when it's some random shit like. i don't know show us the character's NOTION through their pov where all their notes are in a disarray and there's something particularly incriminating in there. or... i don't know . i don't know why that was the first app i thought of sorry clearly i'm not the creative here but you know !!! that's why the 814 spotify playlist communication was so brilliant to me because i seriously could have never thought of that. and i also love juxtaposing different platforms which i've definitely said before but to reiterate like fans being overly protective on tumblr is funny and then trollfans being overly critical on a k-pop imageboard is also funny and then when you put them right next to each other it's genuinely hilarious. To me...
really the power of epistolary is like wow what can we glean about this person and their relationships from the vestiges of their mundane lives, from how they communicate via different messaging channels, from what they leave behind for others to see, little notes they write on their receipts or group chat naming conventions or youtube search histories or email notifications for gifts they've ordered.
Hmm.... when i wrote my boy i had such a blast playing around with the concept of interactivity, e.g. expandable notifications, contained scrollable chats inside a phone screen, clickable notifications that navigate the reader from universe to kkt etc. and i think that's also something that would be soo cool to execute on a larger scale (aka on ao3) but i'm always like what exactly would that look like ? i really don't know and i need to go crawl the tags some more to find new fics to read and reflect on, but what i'm always looking for is to see the meta of it, i love when characters break the 4th wall and there's an overwhelming sense of Immersion to the reading experience, where it's not just one linear omniscient view of various twitter conversations. i also love when authors are verryyy very deliberate with how they construct the main character povs and the limitations of The Views we're shown of their profiles/technologies (the shuake does a great job of this) so... i don't know. like for ex i've always wanted to see a fic build in the character's actual contained twitter app view, where the tweets we need to see are scrollable within it and it's purely diegetic, like i know people have done that with discord on ao3 so there are definitely concepts along these lines already being implemented i just don't have a fic to immediately reference. regardless i love when people play around with the endless boundaries and possibilities for mixed media !!! so exciting. ok that's all i had to say

read this a while ago but one of my favs of the genre of hyperspecific academia fic, i think we should all be writing more academia fic and i think nothing surfaces romance better than being a... i can't even finish this sentence. there is nothing objectively less romantic than being in grad school. that being said everyone should still write fic about it
United States v. Barnes, 617 F. Supp. 2d 143 (D.D.C. 2015) by fallingvoices, radialarch, marvel / stevebucky not to be that annoying person who's like i don't even like X ship blah but I don't even like sb. yet everyone and their mom has read this and it truly is sooo brilliant... i also love this one sb fic that was like an annotated paper you could download as a pdf hmm i should go find it because i don't remember how it went but it was super cool!!!
THE RISE OF ASIA: NBA EDITION by inverse, knb / aokaga honestly i feel like it's kind of rare to see semi-popular Pure Journalism/Celebrity Profile fic in fandom so i thought this was really cool when i first read it, super well-executed. there's probably a few like this in hrpf but i think it works especialy well for fictional sports media because it seems more unexpected and "subversive" (and believable), but anyway i probably need to revisit the hrpf archives to refresh my memory.

Why are you the fic of all time. no seriously this is the only fic ever written
5U175 by Closer, suits / marvey brahhhhhhh i love fandom drama fic i love LJ BNF Politics etc. reading semi-old-ish snapshots of fandom is always so much fun because it gets you reflecting on how things have changed and evolved today, even just the way we write "identity porn" in fic is so deeply shaped by Platform and digital cultural overhauls and the nuances of fandom evolving within and across the limitations of the platforms it exists on.

this whole thing is so charming because it's one of the most refreshing executions of social media elements i've read in a long time, and i loveeee the dumb spotify playlist naming motif and how much it Totally Makes Sense for how lando would act irl, also the back-and-forth contact name changing. also another great example of how effectively you can format plain text and less formatting can actually mean more for the cohesiveness of a piece. 10/10
this account's tweets are protected by alsahm, benetnash, p5 / shuake i feel like everyone's read this one LOL it took me a long time to get to because it's kind of a doozy if you don't have adequate persona knowledge but i'm an akechi understander now so i figured it out. p5 fandom really has some fantasticcc multimodal explorations and i definitely think the stylistic choices of the games themselves lend to that kind of in-fandom creativity. super cool to see
