anw i think their first proper event together was the 2021 diving world cup in tokyo because chang yani used to dive with shi tingmao (also cyw's mentor... "i felt calmer when i saw sister maomao was there" ?!?! btw the ex-gf in question is cyw's ex-synchro partner) which is important because this was the event where cyn injured herself after slipping off the board but managed to rally back and win bronze in the final *__* and then they lovesta-d about it afterward. of course. i have a headache.........
more backstory cyw joined national team in 2017 but apparently cyn was already training with them in 2014 (?) cyn had more of a prodigious start and a lot of success when she was younger and they've known each other for a while now (cyw said that she's been calling her 匚匚 for a long time, even before they were teammates... slash roommates slash dating etc. etc.)
also the fact that they're literally dating but cyn is also besties with (aus diver) maddi keeney and they're genuinely adorable together... i'm going to keep bringing up f!814 divers au to h until she writes the spin-off universe for me đ sorry i have to stop making everything about ojp. where were we

context behind the 3m final: maddi keeney won a bronze medal in 3m synchro in rio 2016 but otherwise has never medaled individually, and even worse lost out on bronze in synchro this year after a costly error by her partner. cyn and cyw meanwhile are both 1st-time olympians and cruised their way to gold in the synchro event, but things got rocky with yani right from the start of the individual event when she had poor first dives in both the prelims and sf that put her in a precarious position and forced her to recover. although she always put in a strong performance afterward and made it through without any concerns it became a question of whether she'd be able to contend for 2nd place or even medal at this rate.
in the final she was set to dive before maddi and yiwen each round, who were the penultimate and ultimate divers respectively, and once again got a poor launch on her first dive that put her dead last of 12 divers for the first round. although she recovered after, it wasn't enough to take 1st or 2nd, and maddi split china for her first silver medal. yiwen, who doesn't have quite the same highs and potential that yani has shown at times, is nevertheless a very resilient and highly consistent diver who can put in 7.5-8.0s dives with ease, so even without any 9s she's capable of taking gold as long as she keeps performing at her base level :') gif1 was maddi and cyn after maddi's last dive and before cyw went, while the next ones are all three of them hugging and celebrating and comforting one another T__T clearly happy but also a bit bittersweet with cyw trying to comfort cyn while she tears up... CAN YOU IMAGINE WINNING YOUR FIRST INDIVIDUAL OLYMPIC GOLD MEDAL AND YOU'RE MORE FOCUSED ON COOING AT YOUR GIRLFRIEND AND MAKING SURE SHE ISN'T TOO SAD!!!!!!!! i'm going to mcfreaking lose it. anyway
