girlrockwriting this because it's friday and i'm tired and hate working <3
ok so the thing about tw is that it ran from 2011-2017 but the movie came out in 2023 ??? so you can very clearly see the variation in fanon between the early seasons and then the lull between the end of the show and the movie... which is v fascinating 2 me !
personally i watched up until ermmm i think season 3b which apparently is the peak of the show π how did this shit go on on for 6 seasons... but anyway the seasons i watched came out when i was aged basically 12 to 15 like i remember seeing it on mtv in 7th grade and it was one of my early high school tumblr fandoms so my memory of the whole thing is so shot.. like i totally did not know any late-season lore and genuinely thought dickmadden's ex-boytoy (froy gutierrez) had a decently large role in the show but then i found out through reading 8+ million words (not exaggerating i made a spreadsheet π) of tw fanfiction over the past 2 months that he's like BARELY IN IT ?! and stiles is obviously by and large the fan favorite and i honestly think a large part of it is that dob is the most talented actor the show had to offer so his character got a lot of complexity that they literally could not give to tposey for scott despite him technically being the lead π so the whole fandom is basically just people cycling stiles and projecting onto him heavily (annoying geeky bisexual with adhd who gets panic attacks)...
but then dob got severely injured on the maze runner set in like... 2016 ??? or whereabouts and essentially disappeared from the public eye while he recovered so from what i hear his role was heavily minimized in s6 and well... yeah. i did not watch the last 3 seasons so i know nothing LOL. except i've kind of skimmed some of the wiki pages so i'm familiar with the basics of like >jackson gay (which i alr knew happened because of noah galvin colton haynes pussy bullshit feud but not the point) >there are these new random guys like LIAM ? whoever that is and miss theo... actually more on theo as a character l8r >something with "dread doctors" and this hit list thing and eichen house which apparently was in s3 but i totally did not remember it... honestly for the first 4 million words i read i was constantly fighting for my life trying to figure out whether something was canon or whether the author just had an amazing capacity for worldbuilding and a very active imagination >but honestly most of the canon late in the series is almost never in fic because a lot is usually set around s2/s3/s4... again because this show was most popular when i watched it because i love to follow #trends. i guess
anyway that's why the ficdom's longevity is so wild to me because i'm reading some of these fics from 2012 and they're talking about how gay marriage isn't legal in california and i'm like ??? tf and then i switch tabs to another 2021 epic and they're playing AMOGUS on DISCORD... like Brahhhh.
moving on the morality scale in fanon is basically:
- kate + gerard = evil 100% of the time... derek's whole life is honestly so facked up because he's like a victim of statutory rape by his secretly an evil werewolf hunter substitute teacher who uses him to kill his entire family minus two of his sisters and his uncle and then his uncle goes batshit feral crazy and kills his sister while his other sister disappears somewhere for years and then he burns his uncle alive or whatever and then somehow he manages to come back to life... and then he's stuck herding around these annoying little teenagers while repressing deep trauma and grieving the loss of his entire family and also the only girl he only ever really loved also died because of him like omggg gurl u need to stop being so tragic it's tew much. anyway where were we
- theo = honestly i can't tell whether people actually like him or not across fandom because i think people who watched the whole show ship him with liam but in sterek fic he's always like the most unhinged evil man ever ??? if it's an early fic they'll occasionally use matt daehler the kanima guy as the stand-in villain but whenever there's like Abusive Relationship plotline it's always that mfer THEO... so there is that
- peter = honestly love fanon petah... i've read a few fics where he's entirely evil but most of the time he's amoral in the best way possible
- scott = omg i did not know fans hated his ass like dat !!!!!! there's literally a whole ass tag that's like scott being a bad friend and being too lawful good for stiles and pushing him away and putting him in danger like... i think the thing about tw fic is that stiles is THEE perfect self-deprecating whumpy wronged marysue type of character in a very spider-man way hence aforementioned levels of heavy projection............. no comments on whether i've read multiple million words of spider-man whump. ok yes i have whatever
anyway my understanding of the main ships:
> scott: early fics will just default him with allison and sometimes even later fics keep her but whenever she's dead as per canon there's kira... sometimes there's isaac in the mix but that's about it
> i feel like every single fic i read always has background boyd/erica... also i was reading up on the wiki and realized THEY WERE NEVER EVEN PROPERLY CANON ??? or were they like surely they must have been ??? dude i do not remember watching this show. i think i literally shipped kira and lydia in 2012... also i did not realize that boyd and erica were literally only in s2 but that's what i mean by people not caring outside of s1-3 canon at best because you'd think they'd been in the whole damn show by how universally they appear as supporting characters in fic... and i've read a decent amount of stuff published after the show ended too LOL. i think they're dead in like 10% of the stuff i see

Okay like the whole reason i started reading fic in the first place is because i ran out of 814 fic and i really wanted to just read like tropey stuff from a popular fandom that would have a lot of content i wouldn't run out of in a week and i ended up in tw because i have some familiarity with the source media and i don't absolutely hate both of the characters involved π because even if i don't actually care about the show or the ships as a whole i did love stiles when i was 13 so it goes a long way in making him the fandom_0... as in i did occasionally read spn and whatever fic back in 2012 for convenience but it was always a lot less willingly because i don't care about those men !!! so anyway. where were we... omg maybe i should go back and read some old x-men fic. ok sorry

> okay the thing about STILES is that apparently at some point in the show or whatever deaton (magic emissary vet dude) is like oh stiles you have this spark you can complete the mountain ash circle (powder thing that repels werewolves) if you believe weallyyyyy hard and then stiles does and it's barely even a thing in the show ? but apparently it's become a huge part of fanon and everyone made up this idea of stiles being a SparkTM aka like an ALL-POWERFUL MAGIC USER... like i lichr thought it was canon at first because it kept showing up and was trying to figure it out ahslfdkh and then i realized fans just made it up... but idk it's kind of fun i love a widespread fanon concept ! so because of that a lot of people write him as a magic user even though in the show i'm pretty sure he's just a normal human lol. also apparently he goes to FBI Academy and that's how they explain him being gone for all of s6 or something. could be wrong idk. also the other stiles lore is that he was possessed by an evil fox spirit in s2 which is how allison and other characters die so there's a lot of angsty fic about that and like him being pushed out of the pack and having ptsd and survivor's guilt about it and then also when they do write were!stiles he's often a werefox... which is not necessarily because of the nogitsune i think it might also just be his most fitting assigned k-pop idol emoji π

BUT in fic people will still write a/b/o worlds and occasionally fold them in so you can be a pack beta who's also an omega or something or like a human omega (a/b/o) and a werewolf beta (pack) alpha (a/b/o). or whatever... not that i've read a lot of tw a/b/o fic or anything. haha. anyway i think honestly 95% of sterek fic is 1 derek 0 stiles which is like... u know what i'm not usually a big fixnoreverse guy but i kind of subscribe to it this time. sorry. not to be like that

1. hook, yarn, sinker - steter / 65.6k / kid fic + crafts au
β this was everyth to me like obsessed with reluctant father figure phale and derek being this shy little anxious kid whom stiles teaches how to CROCHET... so cute and lovely and scratches the kid fic itch perfectly. sorry for being that guy
2. home - sterek / 167.1k / canonish alt reality stiles moves into derek's place after his dad dies etc. fic
β dude this fic is literally so fucking insane because i was reading it and it has these incredibly realistic illustrations and i was like wow this is such an undergoing like what a cool collab ! i love to see writers and artists working on epics together like this... and then i went to show someone and looked at the author and realized THE SAME PERSON WROTE AND ILLUSTRATED THE WHOLE THING TT__TT genuinely so shook and in awe... like the amount of talent and patience and dedication... also beautifully whumpy
3. prince among werewolves - sterek / 101.0k / ummm hypothetically more kid fic
β i read this pretty early on while i was on my kid fic kick but i just remember thinking it was quite sweet and i really liked the plot line of derek's trans daughter
ermmmmm. ahmmm. maybe i won't rec a few certain tropes and themes. for everyone's peace of mind
4. but also if u wanted to read mpr*g hypothetically i'm obsessed with the whole concept of JANE THE VIRGIN AU... ok i'll stop linking kid fic now. also in the realm of like (semi-)feral fic i just read this one where derek is like feral after laura's death and starts courting stiles and enjoyed it a lot... sorry for being entertained by the Brah stop leaving dead deer on my porch it's frowned upon by society trope
5. actually speaking of Werewolf Courting i enjoyed selection critera - steter / 74.9k recently which is basically werewolf courting + marriage of convenience... i just think steter are fun because they're both assholes <3
6. the quickest way to a man's heart (is through his bottomless pit) - sterek / 54.1k / chef au + neighbors

β dude this fic is literally so fucking insane because i was reading it and it has these incredibly realistic illustrations and i was like wow this is such an undergoing like what a cool collab ! i love to see writers and artists working on epics together like this... and then i went to show someone and looked at the author and realized THE SAME PERSON WROTE AND ILLUSTRATED THE WHOLE THING TT__TT genuinely so shook and in awe... like the amount of talent and patience and dedication... also beautifully whumpy

β i read this pretty early on while i was on my kid fic kick but i just remember thinking it was quite sweet and i really liked the plot line of derek's trans daughter

5. actually speaking of Werewolf Courting i enjoyed selection critera - steter / 74.9k recently which is basically werewolf courting + marriage of convenience... i just think steter are fun because they're both assholes <3

> also i forgot to mention this but when i first started reading tw fic again i was SHOOK by how british this fandom is... like i was literally experiencing a lesson in solidarity with british f1 fans real time who have to read fic by americans where like oscar is taking ap classes and lando is watching hulu in his monaco apartment or whatever because some of these fics were so egregiously british it was making me laugh out loud... like why is he asking his dad if he fancies a cup of tea. also it's kind of funny when people clearly don't understand how the american college system works and they all go to stanford or they treat ucb like it's a tiny school where everyone knows each other etc. etc. but i don't really care of course it's just interesting to read about in the larger context of fic worldbuilding. and i think it is british people's right to make stiles stilinski a spiritual londoner idk... i support it !!!
anyway enough of that. next time i am happy to offer a post on the 12934203 Cozy Indie Games i've been playing on steam while severely sewersidal. may i interest anyone in a lil review
