i want to talk about my neopets...
i used to play neopets* circa age 8 as most people did, but unfortunately i barely remember any of my old usernames and am incapable of unearthing my profile from when i was a child. it's possible that i was in a guild with my sister (who remembers her account username), but she isn't able to actually access her account + it's also possible that i wasn't cool enough to be in the guild with her so we're too lazy to explore that venue on the off chance we can locate my old profile (which probably has an ugly username anyway). the main benefit of having an old account is that it helps you accrue stakes/unlock privileges for certain features, such as food club bets + access to hidden tower (which is only 4 months so not that bad) + shortened grave danger times for older petpets + rarity caps for restocking. but i'll get there eventually and it's not like i'm hurting for NP so i don't mind too much re: food club...
*i would say i played neopets a lot but i just spent way too much time on the internet growing up and played every adoptable/adventure browser game imaginable in general, so i actually don't think my neopets account was all that impressive... my mains were chickensmoothie, clubpenguin, neopets, ponyvallΓ©e/ponystars, webkinz, howrse, fantage, millsberry, babville, adventurequest, etc. this is life when you're obsessed with animals but your parents refuse to get any pets. now we have 2 dogs and 2 cats across 3 siblings and no grandchildren π
anyway the reason i started playing neopets again is that vikram introduced me and was like I Think You'd Like It and now he's too busy playing his FIGHTING GAMES so he stopped playing it anyway π AND I'M ALONE. but i appreciate that he gave me a starting donation to help me get my first faerie PB because even though i'm very fairly rich now it was tough to get that balance going at first. well also because i was too stubborn to connect neopass but we will discuss this

β customization and paint brush options have increased vastly over the past few years! it's fun and exciting to chase down certain items or plan customs on DTI
β it's literally low stakes gambling with fake money for adults. restocking your shop / putting high value items up for auction or on the trading post / buying stocks / placing bets / stamp collecting / spinning the wheels etc. all let you microdose risky adulting behavior for funsies. i feel like a mercari seller but i don't have to actually ship anything... i love playing the restocking game and getting ragebaited by the post office because i'm too slow for any stamp over 100k worth
β there's really something for everyone... my account is glitched so my high scores don't count on the tables for some reason so i stopped playing minigames as often but that was really the fun of it for me when i was a child and it's nice and nostalgic to revisit those. even if some of the games are depreciated now because of the death of flash
β the new quest log format has made it a lot more friendly for casual players and a lot of rare items have been made more readily available and accessible. you get a special item every 7 days for maintaining your daily quest log streak + get to spin for NP with trudy's surprise + neopass quest log gives you a ton of extra items too. overall it's really easy to get started and a lot of items that would have been impossible to obtain 10 years ago are spoonfed to you
β there are lots of recurring events/challenges, like the plot, faerie festival (happening now), advent calendar, etc. which makes participating regularly worth it
β i'm not Super into battledome but i do train my main pet (meiyoks) and i think it's fun... i'm bad at doing this regularly though. but for some people battling is a big part of their neopets experience
π΅ costs
β neopets is f2p ! however, there is a distinction between NP and NC items. NP is neopoint items that are entirely through the default neopets currency, and a majority of functional items (brushes, potions, books, battledome weapons, etc.) are obtained through neopoints. NP is therefore functionally more important and makes the game quite accessible, with the only caveat being certain NP items that are obtainable through real merchandise/event item codes IRL. NC, on the other hand, pertains to neocash, which is real-money currency and mostly used for pet styling and fashion items. the appeal of NC items is that they're being continuously released and are usually better-designed. neopets also brings back "nostalgic" styles or altogether new colors that you can apply to your pet like an accessory instead of being a permanent paint brush transformation, so someone who doesn't want to grind NP for a paint brush could instead spend real money on an NC style. the only thing is that NC styles aren't compatible with clothing so you have to accessorize the pet custom in different ways (with BGs, FGs, and effects).
β neopets also has a "premium" subscription that's $69.95 ($59.95 on sale) a year. it gives access to the SSW (super shop wizard, search all available shop prices for an item), 2x rewards or 2x opportunities to play on certain wheels and games, one free species change per year, and recurring goodie bags. IMO it's worth it if you're a daily player, so i did purchase this because i'm an adult with adult money to use however i want i suppose, but again you can be very successful in this game without spending a single cent.
β the NC world in neopets is soooo scary... like there's a whole trade economy that doesn't exist with NP because you can't sell NC items, so you have to cold neomail people off JN tradelists and be like hey will you trade this thing for my thing please don't yell at me and tell me to fuck off and die. jk people are really nice it's just nervewracking!! i don't dabble too much in NC shopping/trading but i've had success the few times i tried.

β jellyneo is the site for almost everything. it has a dailies page that you can modify for your own needs if you log in which imo is very helpful. you can also search the item database to find item price history and fluctuations, as well as create wishlists (including NC trade lists) to keep track of items you're looking for. there are also useful price checking/checklist tools for album trading and clearing out your SDB.
β other than jellyneo, i really like itemdb which is actually a bit more sophisticated in terms of item prices and quicker to update fluctuations. it also tracks item appearances on the TP/auction house, and if logged you can also see NC trade history for certain items to ascertain the consensus worth of that item. i don't really understand caps (currency evaluation) that well so i usually go off JN UFT/WL ratios but using both in tandem is good for crafting a balanced trade. itemdb also has a restock guide that i think is good for getting into restocking (the practice of buying cheap shop items that resell for a lot higher).
β the neopets subreddit and discord channel are also both useful, obviously i don't Use the discord channel because i'm 3423843 years old and that's scary but specifically if you send "!magma [un]" to the neopetsbot on dc it'll tell you your 15-minute magma pool window which is really useful. because i was not going to check this for 24 hours myself!

β omg i forgot to mention the worst part. to incentivize you to play neopets' TWO MOBILE GAMES, faerie fragments and tales of dacardia, there's a whole part of the daily quest log where you can connect your neopass account to the games for 500k NP and then you also get quests for those games too. faerie fragments is a gardenscapes dupe like literally, i saw a screenshot of karina's gardenscapes or whatever and was like holy shit is it legal for them to be straight up ripping assets like this lmfao, and unfortunately i actually find it quite fun but tales of dacardia is actually awful and it's all such a grind. thankfully the dailies take 2 min but it's the principle of the thing... but anyway playing these games will actually give you sooo much monies because they dump a bunch of monthly events into them with super rare/high worth items and it's actually useful to play :/ that's how they get you. so obviously my dailies include quest log + ff + tod

now let me show things from my account... one thing i do is that i have a spreadsheet to track my neopet shop profits because your sales history doesn't have a sum value and it also tells you to delete it periodically for the servers!! so i was like Ok let me put this into gdrive. it's very satisfying to see that i've accrued 40M just from offloading items...
i also hit 113M+ in my bank account yesterday, so i decided to finally sort out my gallery theme and categories and get more serious about collecting. i do collect stamps in a lowkey way as well, but completionist stamp collecting goes well into the billions and is less "accessible" so i mostly just have all the cheap stamps atm and am playing the waiting game for certain rare ones to enter common item pools/quest log.
i've been collecting plushies and placing them haphazardly in my gallery since day 1, but yesterday i went through it and decided i really didn't like how it looked, because there are over 2000 neopets plushies and it was hard to decide on a theme. i have 250 capacity in my gallery now and decided to only focus on baby, faerie, plushie (paint brush), and "character" plushies, as well as a few other themes i liked as extra. i also color-coded everything and i reallyyyy like how it looks now! there is too much to screenshot so here is a gif.
last but not least... my 3 favorite pet customs! i do enjoy the customization aspect of neopets but i will say i don't spend All The Time ever on it compared to some people who are really into nc items because obviously that requires a larger financial commitment lol, but i have 3 pets named after my katseye biasline and they're my babies <3 meiyoks is my main active pet whom i train + read books to, but i also really love my lara and yoonchae ones.
meiyoks is a snow flotsam with a dyeworks rainbow iridescent mermaid tail, lararaj is actually just a purple aisha but i bought the NP (!) kiki-inspired aisha wearables to put on her and i think it fits perfectly! and then yoonchaeng is a faerie cybunny but i gave her a fun lil wig haha. i love them π

your account page is so pleasing and it makes me want to hunt for a better one to display all my pets at once! or code one, if i can ever find the time for that... lararaj and yoonchaeng are stunning btw!!

Date: 2025-10-14 06:13 pm (UTC)i love that you got op81s/ln4s, i'm lowkey shocked those names weren't taken before?? turn5 was a wildly lucky pound find, i don't remember what she was before i morphed her into an orange xweetok (which i did because iirc xweetok is the only pet with racing gear, even though it's not yet converted to html) but i tried my best to get the custom mcl-adjacent! but since there are only red/black/blue variants of the usuki car, i liked the idea of having some ferrari in there (+ the petpet) so it's extra clear what i'm going for. like i said, i've sunk a wild amount of time and money on these haha
