Aug. 31st, 2023 10:16 pmhave a few things to post at some point (setting up a running/composite media tracker so that i don't have to make it at the end of the year + i want to hopefully slap together a quick variation of this layout before i jump into theme-ing from "scratch" again... if that even happens!) but earlier this week i saw that tweet about picking 20 of your favorite songs and it reminded me of one of my ~comfort~ playlists so i wanted to talk about it. i think i liked that tweet because it specified that it's not about the 20 Best Songs In The World but just 20 that you just genuinely like and that make you feel good and you know in the end music is about what it does for you personally and you don't really need to justify your enjoyment of it past that.
anyway i was trying to think of so many of my Perfect Songs (white ceiling, beach life, earthmover... etc. etc.) and at some point i was like 1) wow my taste is so bad, but also 2) these are all just tracks from my long songs playlist!!!
i put this together a year-ish ago so i could collect a little sample of satisfyingly long tracks and it rly is one of my most beloved playlists because whenever i listen to an album 80% of the time my fav is the one that's like 3 minutes longer than average, and i think the temporal organization is also so pleasing to my brain lol. i used to be mildly embarrassed about the lack of ~classic rock~ on this because it's seriouslyyy just a ton of Recent Shit i'm endeared by, but now i'm like you know what let's all speak truth to power and enjoy the self-indulgent shit we enjoy. so!
does anyone else enjoy a good song above 10 minutes... very long week so apologies for the aimless post. would love any good recs though!

π¦ top 10 parannoul songs
Feb. 28th, 2022 09:50 pmyes i know no one cares about this man but clearly i'll write whatever i want

intro
parannoul is an anonymous shoegaze artist based in seoul, vaguely college-aged, who accrued mild internet recognition when his self-released album blew up across various music microcommunities in 2021. he has a large catalog of post-rock songs that used to exist on soundcloud under the moniker laststar (λμ΄λ³), now principally goes by parannoul (νλλ
Έμ), and also makes some ambient side project stuff under mydreamfever. most of his popularity comes from an international audienceβhe is largely hated by the dc post-rock gall, his music is often viewed as noisy trash by domestic cynics, he will never be nominated or recognized by kma, etc. etc. but he is distributed by poclanos in korea so there's that. tstnpotd vinyl coming out soon!
you can learn more about him in this sonemic interview, this woove interview, this blank slate elyria interview, this sleep like a pillow interview, or this pitchfork review.
the reason i wanted to make this post is that it was the one-year anniversary of To See the Next Part of the Dream (2021 AOTY) (to some) (to me) a few days ago, and to commemorate this occasion parannoul released a b-side ep with a few demos and songs that didn't make the album's final cut. and of course after digesting it i was like oh wow... this guy actually has enough tracks under his belt for me to start discerning things......

so that's what this post is.

[Interviewer]: How would you describe your music to someone who hasnβt heard your music before?
νλλ Έμ: trash disguised as amateurism
Eventually, when I became an adult, there was no one around me. I didnβt even achieve anything musically for 3 years in high school, nobody listened to my music while I was making about literally 130 songs. If I had been bullied, I could have blamed others. But I knew it was purely all my fault, so it was even more painful.
Well, sadness is relative. It seemed very big to me. To bear that situation, I focused on making the album. It was like running away from something. [...] I donβt feel bad about being a loser, jobless, hikikomori, and loner who makes songs alone in my room. Actually, I feel proud about that sometimes.
